I want to try it out
If you haven't tried SCUBA diving before, the first thing you should do is arrange a TRY-DIVE. This short introduction to diving is conducted in the warmth and security of the pool at Bingham Leisure Centre.

You will be shown how to safely use the under water breathing apparatus before being taken on your first dive at your own pace by a qualified and experienced Dive Leader.

At the end of your Try-Dive you will know whether SCUBA is for you! The only requirements are that you are a good swimmer, are generally fit and in good health. The cost of a Try-Dive is £10.00, which is re-funded against your first years membership if you decide to join our Club.

To arrange your Try-Dive, please contact the New Members or the Training Officer. You can find out how to contact them via the Executives page.

I Like it - What's next?
Once you have been for your Try-Dive, and expressed a desire to join our Club, you will be welcome to come along to our swim sessions, free of charge, while your membership application is being processed.

New members are required to have a diving medical before being allowed to continue with their Ocean Diver Training. See the Resources page for details.

The Club owns eight sets of pool training equipment, but there may be a queue while the trainees ahead of you complete their pool training.

If you are lucky you will be able to start your pool training and lectures as soon as we have seen your completed medical form. Pool training will take approximately ten weeks to complete.

What's in Ocean Diver Training

Pool (Sheltered Water) Sessions - designed to make you familiar with the equipment, and the basics of SCUBA Diving.

Theory Lectures - The kit, the signals, the Physics, etc.

Open Water Lessons - Practical sessions in safe, sheltered, open water. Quite often at Stoney Cove in Leicestershire, these sessions build upon the skills gained in the pool, and build up confidence in the new diver.

A Theory Test - to make sure you can remember most things!

A Practical Test - a dive with an instructor to make sure that everyone is happy that you're as good as your instructor has told everyone!

Four dives of different types selected from:

  • Shelving Shore Dive
  • Steep Shore Dive
  • Small Boat Dive (Rib)
  • Large Boat Dive (Hard boat)
  • Low Visibility Dive
  • Drift Dive
  • Wall Dive
  • Dive in Protective Clothing (Semi-dry / Dry suit)

So that's all?

Yep! Medical, Pool Training, Theory, Open Water and a selection of different dive conditions, then present your log book to the committee for approval, and that's it - Ocean Diver.

Then you can go on to Sports Diver, Dive Leader, Assistant Instructor, and have your own trainees.
