Diving the 'Glupe' up in the Orkneys

A recent long weekend was spent on Lundy Island by some 12 divers and one non-diver.  The trip over was an adventure in itself - following on from a SW gale the previous two days.  So Obsession II was the only boat to sail in 4 days!!!  Even the regular ferry from Ilfracombe was mainland bound, as was the paddle steamer SS Waverley.  Only five helped to 'feed the fish' on the way over, but conditions were much calmer in the Eastern lee of the island, ready for the afternoon dive at Brazen Ward.

The first day over - then began the trek up to the top of the island to 'The Bunkhouse', which was to be our home for the next four nights.  Apart from one brave soul, strict segregation of the sexes meant the 'ladies' in the locked off alcove downstairs and the snoring brigade in the upper gallery above the lounge.  Morning, and particularly, evening showers were mixed in terms of whether you had hot or cold water - although the latter did have some merit in some cases!

The following few days proved mixed in terms of weather and diving - due mainly to the after effects of the previous gales on the usually muddy bottom.  However, interesting dives were undertaken at Gull Rock,  wrecks of Roberts and Iona II, and the Knoll Pins on the Eastern side, and Battery Point on the western side.

Excellent seamanship and spot on drop locations, as well as copious tea/coffee and chocolate biscuits were providede  by the crew of Obsession II.

Breakfasts were of the DIY variety, but evening meals were taken at the Marisco Tavern - good, wholesome and relatively cheap.  All left well stocked - but perhaps that could also have been the beer!

Three brave souls (+ 2 accompanying photographers) took the long trek overland acroos to Brazen Ward one evening to swim with the seals.  Unfortunately the latter were there, but did not wish to participate.

All in all, a good session on the island, and only an hour and a quarter return trip.
